- What We Do -
Broadening Horizons
Broadening Horizons was launched as part of our 125th anniversary celebrations and reflects our belief that every child deserves the opportunity to pursue interests, ignite passions and discover their talents, regardless of their family’s financial circumstances.
The programme supports disadvantaged children and young people to access regular enrichment activities within their local community that they may otherwise be unable to afford. These activities provide far more than just a hobby; they help build confidence, resilience, self-esteem, friendships and a sense of belonging.
Whether a child dreams of playing football, learning gymnastics, performing on stage, mastering martial arts, dancing, swimming or developing another talent, Broadening Horizons helps remove the financial barriers that can prevent participation. By accessing opportunities that many of their peers take for granted, children can develop new skills, improve their physical and mental wellbeing, and discover interests that may shape their future aspirations.
For many children, Broadening Horizons is their first opportunity to take part in an organised extracurricular activity. The impact can be transformational, leading to increased confidence, stronger social connections, better wellbeing and the chance to uncover talents that may otherwise have remained hidden.
I have interests.
I have passions.
I have talents.
Research consistently shows that children from disadvantaged backgrounds benefit most from enrichment opportunities, yet they are often the least likely to access them. Our aim is to help bridge that gap and ensure that financial circumstances do not prevent children from enjoying the experiences, opportunities and sense of belonging that every child deserves.
We work closely with a growing network of trusted activity providers across the East Midlands, offering a wide range of sports, creative arts and recreational opportunities. Once a referral is approved, the LCH team carefully matches each child with an activity that aligns with their interests, talents and ambitions, while also ensuring it is accessible to the family and located close to home.
We then work directly with parents, carers and providers to remove barriers to participation and support children as they begin their new activity, helping them gain the greatest possible benefit from the experience.
All of our partner schools can nominate children and young people who would benefit from the programme, allowing us to work together to create opportunities, build confidence and help children fulfil their potential.
If you are a school interested in working with LCH, we’d love to hear from you.
If you know a child who could benefit from Broadening Horizons, please speak to their school in the first instance and ask them to contact us about making a referral.
